INTERNATIONAL FLIGHTS TO RESUME AND LONG TERM VISAS REINSTITUTED

18 Sep 2020

South Africa will move to Level 1 lockdown on Monday, 21st September 2020.

In line with this move international flights will resume on the 1st October 2020, subject to certain containment and mitigation measures. These measures will include the following:

  • Travel may be restricted to and from certain countries that are classified as high risk. A list of these countries should be published soon.
  • All travellers on arrival in South Africa will have to present a negative Covid-19 test result which must not be older than 72 hours from the time of departure.
  • In the event of a traveller not having done a Covid-19 test prior to departure, then they will be required to remain in mandatory quarantine at their own cost.
  • All travellers will be screened on arrival and those presenting symptoms will be required to remain in quarantine until a Covid-19 test is conducted.
  • All travellers will be asked to install the Covid Alert South Africa mobile app.

In April when the original lockdown was announced all long term visas of persons out of South Africa at the time of lockdown were revoked. These visas have now been reinstituted, and persons can use them in order to reenter South Africa. This is subject to such visas still being valid and not having expired.

In preparation for the re-opening of our borders, South African missions abroad will open for visa applications and all long-term visas will be reinstated.

Further details are expected to be published over the next week or so, and we should get further clarity.
