REMOTE WORKING VISA DELAYED

16 Sep 2024

The Remote Working Visa (or Digital Nomad Visa) was published in the Government Gazette on the 20th May 2024. It has been eagerly awaited after being in the pipeline for a number of years.

However despite the publication in the Government Gazette in May the Remote Working Visa has still not become available. The new Minister of Home Affairs, Dr Leon Schreiber, has now explained that the delay in the introduction of the Remote Working Visa is due to the need to bring the regulations of the Remote Working Visa in line with the country’s tax regulations.

When the visa was published in the Government Gazette tax experts issued reservations that the Remote Working Visa was not aligned with the tax regulations and this would lead to problems further down the line. Unfortunately, these warnings were ignored by the previous Minister of Home Affairs, and they now need to be rectified.

The new Minister has confirmed that once the visa regulations have been brought in line with the tax regulations then the visa will be implemented and rolled out. Unfortunately, there isn’t a timeline for this as yet.
